Winter humidity across a large woodworking floor

This woodworking plant needed humidity control across 255,300 square feet with a 24-foot ceiling. Its 6,127,200 cubic feet of air were influenced by up to 90,000 CFM of makeup air.

The design addressed winter conditions that can contribute to shrinkage, checking, warping and changes in joint fit as wood moves through machining, assembly and finishing. The specified target was 35% RH at an average winter temperature of 70°F.

Eight fans per zone

Five independent zones each had a 2.5 gpm pump station, a humidistat and eight ceiling-hung 36-inch fans. Combined rated pump capacity was 12.5 gpm. Every fan carried a 27-inch stainless mist ring with 14 blue-band, ruby-orifice nozzles rated at 7.94 lb/hr each.

High-pressure distribution began with 1/2-inch nylon tubing at each station and transitioned to 3/8-inch tubing toward the fans. The specified equipment package included 1,000 feet of 1/2-inch tubing and 4,000 feet of 3/8-inch tubing.

Automatic control with service access

An Omron PLC at each station coordinated fan and pump operation from its humidistat signal. Pressure monitoring, indicator lights, an hour meter and an electric drain valve supported operation and maintenance.

Ball valves at the mist rings provided isolation points for servicing. The equipment package included a spare ring and maintenance supplies, along with a project-specific user manual and equipment list.

RO water at all five stations

Every pump station received reverse-osmosis water. Treatment planning addressed scale in the pump, lines and nozzles, along with the dissolved minerals that can remain after mist evaporates.

The RO system's storage and distribution were part of the supply plan. A 5-micron pre-filter served each pump station before the water entered the high-pressure system.

Owner installation with IHC support

The plant handled installation, including electrical and plumbing service to the pump stations, with IHC technical support throughout. The supplied project manual connected the equipment list with operating and maintenance information for the plant team.
